(You're More Than) Just A Season
Written Summer 2007
This song came about because of a conversation a friend of mine (actually one of my little brothers in KKΨ) and I were having concerning her love life. She was relating to me another conversation she'd had with her boyfriend. At one point, she complained that to most men, she was just a phase or season they were going through, and the relationships never amounted to anything. Her boyfriend then responded that she was "more than just a season." Upon her telling me this, I immediately replied that his statement was a song in the making.
This song is one of several I wrote during the summer of 2007, a very fertile time in my writing career which came after a long drought of inactivity. This new phase I'm in has been seemingly marked musically by my writing songs that uses the more of my range within each of them, especially the higher end. As a consequence, I've had difficulty singing them in different keys, as a move in either direction makes the song either too high or too low for me. This particular song could be brought down some, as it is stays fairly high throughout.
In contrast, one of my previous phases was marked by my writing songs at the bottom end of my range (usually brought about by the fact I was writing late at night, when my comfortable range is naturally lower). Take, for example, "Corner of My Mind:" I have difficulty singing this in the original key to this day and had to capo it up to the fourth fret to perform it, a shift up of a major third. The same is true to some extent with the songs "Drivin' North," "If or When," and "Receipts."

Love at first sight, to be polite, sounds so cliché Fighting against this feeling, this sense we'll fade away, We fall into the framework The seasons, the tides and lovers besides change over time They're repeating that true love is fleeting, not sublime Don't fall for faulty reason, realize you're more than just a sesason. Sometimes we find someone whose kindness overflows. Then search your soul, you'll find your whole essence, it knows. Then put no one else above him, don't be afraid to love him. My dearest friend, I will extend to you my dream: That you'll find the man with whom you'll span 'cross love supreme. He'll put no one else above you, won't be afraid to love you. That moment has begun, realize you're more than just a season |
